Maria Ruseva Interview: Building a Sustainable Fashion Brand
Early Inspirations and Career Beginnings

Introduction
Maria Ruseva is the founder and designer behind Moda de la Maria, a British sustainable fashion brand established in 2019. With more than 18 years’ experience in the fashion industry, she blends the traditions of her Moldovan heritage with a commitment to timeless design, natural materials and responsible craftsmanship.
A Journey Rooted in Craftsmanship
My journey in fashion began over 20 years ago, and it has been one of discovery, learning and a deep commitment to craftsmanship.
I spent 13 transformative years in Istanbul, immersing myself in the vibrant fashion scene. There, I witnessed the rise of disposable fashion and the growing disconnect between quality and mass production. That realisation sparked a strong desire to create something different: something rooted in craftsmanship, quality and sustainability.
Founding Moda de la Maria
In 2013, I moved to London and brought my vision to life by founding Moda de la Maria.
My goal was simple but profound: to offer high-quality, handmade womenswear that celebrates timeless elegance and honours the natural beauty of materials. Each garment is designed and produced in-house, where we pour heart and soul into every stitch and embrace the values of slow fashion.
With every collection, I aim to create pieces that endure: designs rooted in sustainability, authenticity and artistry.
What inspired Maria’s fashion career?
The rich traditions of craftsmanship woven into my Moldovan heritage have been the heartbeat of my journey.
Growing up, my Ukrainian grandfather, a master of handcraft, worked with sheepskin, creating traditional shepherd hats and winter coats. His ability to transform natural materials into something timeless left an indelible mark on me.
My mother, with her incredible skill in stitching, would craft my childhood designs from old clothes, spinning wool, knitting and breathing new life into forgotten fabrics. Watching her, I learned the power of transformation—not only of materials, but of stories.
These deep roots in craftsmanship, combined with my desire to challenge the fast-paced nature of modern fashion, fuelled my passion to create something meaningful. My mother’s unwavering support and encouragement have always been a guiding light.
Together, they inspired me to build a brand that celebrates artistry, sustainability and the stories behind each piece. I wanted to offer women clothing that is beautiful, but also carries the spirit of ethical creation, enduring craftsmanship and a timeless connection to the past.
Key traits for success
Resilience
Building a sustainable fashion brand in a world saturated with fast fashion demands dedication and perseverance.
Every challenge I have faced has strengthened my resolve. Staying true to my vision and values has been my guiding force, proving that integrity and passion can create something lasting, whatever the obstacles.
Attention to Detail
Every thread tells a story. From the moment I touch organic tweeds woven on the Isle of Mull, I feel a connection to land, tradition and craft.
I do not just look at fabric; I listen to it. Each stitch is intentional, and each seam is a quiet promise of quality. Our garments are not rushed. They are built slowly, with reverence. That meticulous care gives our pieces soul.
Empathy
We do not just design clothes—we listen to women. We hear their stories, understand their insecurities and embrace their dreams.
Behind every request lies a deeper need: to be seen, to feel confident and to express one’s true self. We create with heart and purpose, understanding that fashion can empower and reflect who someone is.
A day in the life of a fashion designer
Preparation and research
Each day begins with a quiet but purposeful moment of sourcing the finest natural fabrics: organic wool tweeds, luxurious cashmere, or the smoothest silks and cottons.
I immerse myself in the textures, colours and stories each material tells. From there, I move into the design phase, sketching concepts that blend timeless elegance with the needs of modern women.
We hand-draw sketches and meticulously hand-cut patterns. If a project requires larger production runs, we collaborate with skilled artisans to bring the designs to life.
Every piece is made with care, ensuring our commitment to quality, sustainability and craftsmanship shines through. It is a thoughtful, deliberate process, and every day offers the opportunity to create something special.
Challenges and learning
One of the most rewarding yet challenging parts of my role is balancing sustainability with luxury.
Sourcing materials that meet both the highest standards of quality and sustainability requires careful thought and commitment. To address this, we have built strong, trusting relationships with ethical suppliers who share our values.
We also continually educate ourselves on sustainable practices, ensuring every decision aligns with our mission to create luxurious, eco-conscious garments. It is a challenge we embrace, knowing each step brings us closer to a more responsible and elegant future for fashion.
Memorable Projects

The Signature Tweed Jackets
Designing our signature tweed jackets is one of the highlights of my career.
These pieces are more than garments. They reflect the soul of our brand. We source organic tweed from the Isle of Mull, renowned for its rich heritage, and handcraft each jacket in our London studio.
The result is a blend of timeless elegance and sustainable luxury. Every stitch tells a story, and every detail reflects our commitment to craftsmanship and the environment.
It is a project that encapsulates everything we stand for, making it incredibly rewarding to bring to life.
Staying Current in the Fashion Industry
At Moda de la Maria, we believe in the beauty of timeless design, but we also understand the importance of staying connected to the evolving fashion landscape.
I immerse myself in fashion events, engage with communities championing sustainable practices and continually seek new knowledge in design and ethical production.
My advice is to embrace trends as inspiration, but never let them overshadow your brand’s true essence. Stay true to your core values and let those timeless principles guide your evolution.
Fashion should reflect who you are, not simply what is on the runway.
Advice for Aspiring Creatives
“Quality over quantity” is the advice that has stayed with me most.
In a world where speed and mass production often take priority, we choose to create garments built to last, both in craftsmanship and relevance. This principle aligns with everything we do at Moda de la Maria.
True luxury lies in the details, and enduring quality is always worth the investment.
Stay rooted in your vision and values, however challenging the journey may seem.
The fashion industry can feel overwhelming, but true success lies in authenticity.
Embrace your unique perspective and let your passion for craftsmanship and sustainability guide you.
When you create with purpose and integrity, your work will resonate with people who share your beliefs. Trust that your commitment to meaningful work will set you apart and attract a loyal community that appreciates the heart and soul behind every piece.
